AN INTERESTING PRIVATE-PURCHASE .73 PERCUSSION SERGEANTS OF THE LINE CARBINE SIGNED JOHN WIGGAN, rack no. 28,
circa 1850, with London proved 33in. barrel, block fore-sight, applied standing notch rear-sight, solid top-tang with rounded tip marked '28', borderline engraved Lovell style lock signed 'JOHN WIGGAN', the number '28' repeated on the bar, borderline engraved hammer, walnut full-stock stocked to 3 1/2in. of the muzzle and stamped with a large Earl's crown over 'F' on the left side of butt, brass furniture including scrolled lower tang, the number '28' stamped into the wood behind the tip, two barrel keys, iron stirrup swivels, Hanoverian bayonet catch and iron ramrod

Provenance: This musket bore carbine was produced on the order of Washington Sewallis Shirley, 9th Earl Ferrers (1822 - 1859) of Staunton Harold in Leicestershire for his private militia unit
